A Quiet and Personal Proposal

When my now-husband proposed, I wasn’t completely surprised… we had been discussing marriage for sometime. However, what did blow me away was how much thought and care he put into putting together the perfect proposal.

We had planned a vacation for his birthday down in Florida, where we rented a condo and relaxed for 4 days. I had a feeling something was up, but after a few days past, and no ring materialized, I figured I was just being over-ambitious. After all, I wasn’t even sure he had purchased a ring yet.

On the last night, we decided to stay in and have an al fresco dinner. We grilled some shrimp and vegetables, poured some wine, and watched the sunset. Apparently, this was when he was planning to propose, at least that’s what he says now!

However, right when the moment would have been perfect, some of the neighbors came outside and started loudly discussing the baseball game that had recently concluded. This went on for about a half an hour, when I finally decided that was that, and went inside to clean up.

So, there I was, folding the towels freshly out of the drier, when my boyfriend came up and asked me to dance. I thought he was just being silly, but as we swayed to the music, he reached in his pocket and pulled out the most beautiful diamond and sapphire antique engagement ring. He didn’t get down on one knee, but instead looked me straight in the eye and asked me to marry him.

Of course, I said “yes!” I’ve always looked back at this fondly because it was such a quiet, and personal, proposal — perfect for us.

It’s Their Own Gazebo

A friend of mine proposed to his girlfriend about two years ago after years of dating. They had been dating so many years and seen so many friends date, get engaged, and get married (some after dating less time then they had been together), that my friend’s girlfriend was wondering if he would ever propose to her.

They met in college about five years ago, and had their first date at a park on campus. The park has a lake and a winding path around lots of flowers and other plants and is beautiful. The day he was going to propose, he suggested they take a walk in that park, and go to the gazebo they sat in on their first date. They referred to this gazebo as “their gazebo.”

As they approached, his girlfriend could see that there were a dozen roses waiting on the bench. As much as this surprised her, she was even more surprised when they reached the gazebo. My friend got down on one knee and pulled a ring out of his pocket. He told her that this gazebo was the first place he told her he loved her, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life telling her he loves her.

She cried, he cried, and she said yes. After lots of planning, they were married last year in a big ceremony in front of all their friends and family, and I imagine that gazebo still holds a special place in their hearts.
