Under a Gorgeous Orange Sky

It was the second semester of our senior year, and my future wife and I were neck deep in projects to wrap up our undergraduate degrees. I had spent weeks with the ring in my pocket waiting for the perfect time to propose. I had a million ideas going through my head ranging from the traditional proposal over dinner to the elaborate room full of candles and flowers with her favorite song playing scenario. We were just so busy, and by the end of the day so tired, that nothing came together. We weren’t spending much time together either.

Near sunset after a particularly rainy day spent working on a massive essay, my wife was exhausted and desperately in need of a break. The rain finally stopped, the clouds broke, and revealed a gorgeous orange sky. I realized this was the best chance I would have for a long time. I grabbed her away from her computer and told her to take a break and that we were going to go to her favorite park. Due to the previously inclement weather the park was nearly deserted and we made our way to the Japanese garden (her favorite part of the park). There we stood on a bridge over a serene pool with fish and ducks swimming beneath us. The air was cool and clean, the park was still, and that’s when I turned to her.

I looked into her eyes and said “May I ask you an important question?” As she was about to answer I got down on one knee and pulled the ring box from my jacket pocket. She immediately dropped her purse and started crying. Taking the box from my hand, she opened it and gasped. She grabbed me and pulled me into a huge hug saying “yes yes yes” over and over again. Later she told me that she thought I was going to ask her where we wanted to go to dinner.

After the proposal and going out to eat we came home and it turns out all our friends were over and we got to break the good news to them all at once. It could not have gone better if I had planned it, and I am sure glad that I didn’t.

Discover A Buried Treasure Together

Arrange for a day at a private beach together, building sand castles or digging for shells. On the night before, write a love poem on a piece of parchment paper, roll it into an antique bottle with a cork, and bury it in a well marked spot in the sand near your diggings. Be sure you “find” the bottle as you dig together. Open and read the poem, then present the diamond from your pocket and ask her for her hand in marriage.
