Quirky Engagement Makes Better Memories

This is my engagement story – in two parts – same guy…

I first proposed to my future husband at a park downtown, by a beautiful pond with a fountain. We commemorated the event with a pair of pink lightning shaped earrings (for me) that we bought from a downtown pushcart vendor.

Well, my sweetie was thinking about the non-traditionalness of this approach & decided that he wanted to do the proposing. About two months later, we were at a friends wedding reception in the ballroom of a gorgeous old downtown hotel. After some dinner and dancing, he asked if I would come down with him to get something out of the car.

Now, I am thinking, oooh, engagement ring??? Not exactly. When we got to the car, he whipped out his acoustic guitar and sang a song he had written for me, presented me with a study Bible, then as I sat sideways in the passenger seat, he got down on one knee to officially propose.

Of course I was happy and it was a neat moment, but I must admit that I was like – since he wanted something a little more traditional – WHERE IS MY RING?! Of course, the reason that we enjoy each other so much is that we both are kind of unusual folks. However, I admit to wanting to making a grand entrance back into the ballroom sporting a sparkling tone of his affection.

So, half tongue in cheek & half miffed, I grabbed a silver ring from the party favors & put it on my finger. I had left it on till the next day, when I tripped and fell on campus, snapping my left little finger in the process. At the ER, I pulled it off just in time as the swelling started to kick in.

The happy ending to all this craziness? We’ve been married nearly 20 years now. I still give him grief over the proposal from time to time, but then we have a good laugh. It was *so* us. To this day, I don’t wear a diamond, nor would I ever want to.

BTW, I wore a black wedding dress, got married in a warehouse and we made up our vows live and in real time.

The moral of this story: to thine own selves be true. Be conventional if you must… but quirky makes for much better memories!

Simple and Sweet Marriage Proposal

My husband to be picked out my ring and surprised me by driving to a local park and getting down on one knee near the bridge where we always walk across. He asked me to make him the luckiest man in the world and be his wife.

I accepted, immediately put on the ring, and called everyone I knew!
