Here’s Your Engagement Itinerary…

My friend is in law school and was flying to D.C. to interview with prospective employers. His girlfriend went with him.

As they were driving to the airport, he asked her to get a road map out of a manila envelope he’d put in the back seat. Inside the envelope, instead of a road map, was a folder–nicely bound by Kinko’s, very official-looking that said “X and Y’s engagement itinerary.”

She of course started freaking out. They had to pull off to the side of the road so he could give here the ring and they could be emotional and call the people that they felt had to be called at that very moment. Instead of going to D.C. to interview (this had been a ruse) they were going to an expensive hotel in D.C.

He’d made reservations for three or four consecutive nights at great restaurants in the city, and planned out a week’s worth of romantic drives and side trips–they went to wineries, museums and so forth; he’d even arranged to have her parents drive up from Virginia one afternoon so that they could all have lunch together. Every night when they got back to their hotel room, her favorite bottle of wine was waiting. Not a bad week for everyone concerned.

Best Friends Forever

My future wife and I were friends long before we started dating. She was my best friend.

We often would go hiking or for long walks together talking. We would often go to an island and walk around it talking and getting to know each other. The day that I proposed I took her to dinner and pretended to be on a normal date.

Afterwards, I suggested going for a walk. She agreed. So we went to the beautiful island that we had enjoyed together so much. When we were about halfway around, I started talking about how much I enjoyed being with her and how important she had become to me.

After the conversation had continued for a while, I slowly dropped to one knee and presented her with the ring. It was white gold with a princess cut stone, which I knew she would like because of our past conversations. As eloquently as possible I asked her to marry me.

She was extremely surprised because she hadn’t been expecting me to ask her for a couple more months. She agreed to marry me on the spot. When I bought her ring, it came with a complementary two-room suite so when we had made it back to the car I surprised her again with the large luxury suite with a dozen roses waiting for her.
