A Southern Proposal…
My fiance proposed to me in the sweetest, most romantic way I can imagine.
We were visiting his family on New Year’s Day for a traditional Southern New Year’s meal. I was feeling self-conscious as the only Yankee there, the only one who didn’t understand the symbolism of the foods, the only vegetarian, and the only Jew. Over the course of the day, I’d been trying to ingratiate myself with his family, setting the table, doing dishes, and cooking several vegetarian dishes so that I knew I could eat enough, and so I had something to share with his extended family.
After dinner and dessert, my boyfriend called his family to gather around us. I was sitting at the table drinking coffee, and wasn’t sure what was going on, until my boyfriend knelt down in front of me and pulled out a ring! In a serious and tender voice, he said, “Will you marry me?”
My eyes filled with tears as I said yes. He slid the ring onto my finger and hugged me. And then all his relatives, this big extended Deep South family, clapped and welcomed me to the family as a daughter.
