Since my girlfriend had never expressed any particular preferences when I asked her how she would like to be proposed to, should
that ever happen, I figured I was free to choose any method I could think of!
After preparing for my surprise by making the appropriate arrangements, I invited Betty over so we could go for a drive. It was going to be a surprise, I told her.
A few weeks earlier we noticed an ad for a bi-plane ride and she remarked that it would be fun to take such a ride sometime.
We drove into El Cajon, California, and right in to Gillespie Field. We parked, and walked over to a hangar where parked outside was a beautiful blue and orange 1929 Travellaire bi-plane.
So, that was it, she thought. I was taking her on a bi-plane ride! This certainly was true. We jumped into the heavy insulated jumpsuits they provided for warmth, donned two helmets with speakers and microphones, and climbed into the forward open cockpit.
The entire flight lasted an hour. The pilot knew of my plot to propose to Betty. Yet he noticed that I wasn’t doing it! I wasn’t saying anything, and we were headed back to the airfield!
What was going on? I was getting cold feet. Betty was nauseous from the aerobatics, and was holding a plastic baggy the pilot kept tucked behind some wires up in the front cockpit. The nervousness was terrible, I needed help!
Was there something you wanted to ask?
It was the help I needed!
“Betty” (beep), I spoke into the radio.
“Yes?” (beep) she responded.
“Betty, I love you. I can’t live without you, will you marry me? (beep)
“Yes, I will!” (beep) she replied without a moments hesitation.
It was over! The pilot suggested we temporarily remove our radio microphones so we could lean together for a kiss. Good idea!
And so it was that we left the surface of the earth as boyfriend and girlfriend, and were now returning as soon to be husband and wife!
It wasn’t typically romantic, but it got the job done! And not in a way that I’d regret for the rest of my life because she thought it was special!
A month later a freelance newspaper writer called and asked if he could get our story and borrow some of the photographs we took. We got our picture in a local North County newspaper. Fame!
That was over 10 years ago and I remember it as if it were yesterday.
